Trine awards high school students at annual mathematics competition

More than 140 students representing 15 area high schools took part in Trine University’s 49th annual Mathematics Competition on Feb. 25.

The competition, which included schools from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, consisted of individual and team events for students, with first through third places recognized in both categories. Cash awards were given to the teachers of the top three teams to be used toward math education at their school.

A team from Saint Joseph High School in South Bend, Indiana, consisting of Bryan Onofre-Vivar, John Morin, Julie Walatka and Ethan Miller, won first place, earning renewable $3,000 scholarships toward tuition at Trine University for each member and a $500 cash award for teacher Brett Goodrich.

Joseph Snyder, Jade Snyder, Baylor Miller and Chase Cameron of Northridge High School in Middlebury, Indiana, earned second-place honors, providing a $250 cash award for teacher Trisha King.

A team from Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana, made up of Joshua Oh, Eli Sanders-Fields and Lilith Schammer-Pries, took third place. Teacher Paul McClelland received a $125 cash prize for that placement.

Sultaan Khan of Penn High School won the top individual award, earning a renewable $5,000 scholarship toward tuition at Trine University. Second place went to Braedan Crawford of Northridge and third went to John Morin of Saint Joseph.

In the individual intermediate category, Eli Sanders-Field of Penn High School won first place, Julie Zhang of Penn High School won second place and Drew Carrington of Northridge High School won third place.
