Trine clubs, ChemE department offer STEM activities for Girl Scouts

October 20, 2026

Trine University student organizations and the McKetta Department of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering recently offered activities for girls interested in science and engineering at the 2026 STEM Expo hosted by the Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana (GSNI-M).

The university’s Pre-Physician Assistants’ Club and its chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) each prepared a table with hands-on activities.

The SWE table included fluid dynamics demonstrations. Chapter president Violet Appel, a design engineering technology major from Wyoming, Michigan, helped Scouts build reticulated grabbers.

The chemical engineering department hosted a breakout session for Scouts in fifth through eighth grades, titled, “Food Engineering: When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade!” Undergraduate researcher Adam Burke, a chemical engineering major from Mount Vernon, Indiana, helped design the activity.

About 100 Girl Scouts attended the expo, which was held Sept. 26 at Purdue University Fort Wayne.
