Trine wraps successful esports season; Overwatch 4th in nation

Competing for the first time in the nation’s top ECAC division, Trine University’s Overwatch team finished fourth.

The team defeated the University of Kentucky 3-0 in the Titans division before falling to the University of Delaware.

Trine’s team is made up of Elton Langley, a sophomore from Indianapolis majoring in computer science and information technology; Jonah Kyle, a junior from Valparaiso, Indiana, majoring in computer science and information technology; Logan Gault, a junior from Indianapolis majoring in computer engineering; Brockstan Tschannen, a junior from Angola, Indiana, majoring in extended reality; and Hudson Kelly, a junior from LaGrange, Indiana, majoring in computer science and information technology.

Wyatt Burton, a computer science and information technology major from Edinburgh, Indiana, also finished fourth in the highest division of the College Series Championship iRacing league.

Twenty of Trine’s 26 esports teams qualified for national playoffs this past semester. The Valorant JV finished second in their division, while Overwatch JV finished in the top three.

Trine tops BEL MIAA

Trine esports also completed a successful season in the Block House Esports League, winning the BEL MIAA playoffs on Dec. 7.

Trine earned 150 points in the playoffs, 40 ahead of second-place University of Olivet. The teams won championships in Smash Ultimate and Overwatch and finished as the runner-up in Rocket League. 

In Smash Ultimate, TJ Marsalek, a biology major from Toledo, Ohio, was named MVP and a member of the All-Star team. He earned his second MIAA title along with teammates Tyler Rohn, a computer engineering major from Noblesville, Indiana, and Colten Edgar, a software engineering major from Milford, Indiana.

Eli Middleton, a computer engineering major from Noblesville, Indiana, also was part of Trine’s Smash Ultimate team.

Sayler Wotta, a design engineering technology major from Bronson, Michigan, was named MVP for Overwatch. He also was named to the All-Star team and earned his second MIAA title.

Sam Mohring, a chemical engineering major from Delta, Ohio, Dolan Bush, a biology major from Fishers, Indiana, Vi Klauss, a psychology major from LaGrange, Indiana, and Connor Frappier, an electrical engineering major from Fort Wayne, Indiana, also were named to the Overwatch All-Star team.

Additional team members were Elton Langley, a computer science and information technology major from Indianapolis, and Carson Williams, a mechanical engineering major from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Logan Hooley, a civil engineering major from Goshen, Indiana, was named to the All-Star team for Rocket League and earned his second MIAA title. Logan Gault, a computer engineering major from Indianapolis, also earned his second MIAA title.

Ethan Schroeder, a computer science major from Mountain Lake, Minnesota, also was part of Trine’s Rocket League team.
