An Evening with Indiana Poets: A Virtual Poetry Event

Trine University’s Humanities Institute invites you to come and enjoy an evening of readings and discussions with award-winning Indiana poets. The free poetry event will be held virtually via Zoom on Friday, Sept. 11th, from 4:30 – 6:30 PM EST (US & Canada).
The program, made possible through a grant from the Indiana Humanities in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities, will begin with award-winning poet Adrian Matejka. Born in Nuremberg, Germany, Matejka grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is a former Poet Laureate of Indiana and Pulitzer Prize nominee, and currently teaches at Indiana University in Bloomington.
His inventive work involves the exploration of identity and cultural history. He has written multiple award-winning poetry collections, including The Devil’s Garden, Mixology, The Big Smoke, and Map to the Stars. His first graphic novel, Last on His Feet, is set to come out in 2021.
From 5:00 – 5:45 pm, there will be a discussion between the poets about their work and the art of poetry. George Kalamaras, former Poet Laureate of Indiana and professor of English at Purdue University Fort Wayne will serve as moderator.
Programming will conclude with accomplished poet and writer Nancy Chen Long. She currently works at Indiana University and volunteers with the local Writers Guild to coordinate a reading series for poets as well as offer free poetry workshops.
She is the author of award-winning works Light into Bodies and Wider Than the Sky, and explores the nature of memory, the mind, and identity in her work. Long’s work has been featured in Poetry Daily, Verse Daily, and Indiana Humanities, as well as numerous literary journals including the Copper Nickel, The Cincinnati Review, Tar River Poetry, The Southern Review, and Poet Lore. She is a recipient of the Endowment of the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship in poetry and was winner of the 2019 Poetry Society of America Robert H. Winner Award.
