Trine students present evening of solos, monologues on Oct. 30

Press release by James Tew with editing from Meghan Schrader

Classical and contemporary works ranging from comedy to tragedy will be highlighted on the stage of Trine University’s T. Furth Center for Performing Arts beginning at 7 p.m. Oct. 30.

The university’s Theatre and Music Departments will present “On Broadway! An evening of solos and monologues.” The evening will include solos by Trine students from shows such as The Princess and the Frog, School of Rock, Shrek: The Musical and Aida, and monologues from works such as Goodbye, Charles, King Arthur and I Hate Hamlet.

Theater director instructing student.

Mindy Maples, assistant professor in Trine’s Department of Humanities and Communication, said the wide range of works will evoke laughter and tears throughout the evening.

“For centuries, our ancestors laughed, cried and ruminated over nothing more than live, theatrical productions,” she said. “During troubled times — our current health crisis to be exact — sometimes it’s good to go back to our roots.”

“After the unfortunate but necessary cancellation of our spring musical, we're excited to be coming together to make music again,” said Alyssa Newbill, Trine University adjunct music professor, who is co-directing the show with Maples. “The students are excited to share their talents with the Angola community and to provide some much-needed art and entertainment.”

Angola High School band director Andrew Keiser will provide piano accompaniment for the show.

The performance is free and open to Trine students, but unfortunately isn’t open to the public at this time. Donations will be accepted. Concessions will be available for purchase. Come on out and see these talented young minds in action!

For the safety of the audience, performers and the Trine University community, masks and social distancing will be required for those in attendance.
