Mechanical engineering: Diversity and versatilityabet logo

The Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering at Trine University is among the most diverse, versatile and prevalent of all engineering disciplines. If something moves, it requires the expertise of a mechanical engineer to assess the physics of the environment and of the parts that work to form the whole, the aesthetics of the final product and the logistics of the manufacturing process.

Mechanical engineers are integral to industries including:

  • Technology and innovation
  • Energy conversion
  • Manufacturing
  • Health care
  • Aerospace and automation

The degree: Tools for modern engineering

In the Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering program, you will be immersed in the fundamental tools of modern mechanical engineering:

  • Advanced mathematics
  • Physics
  • Laboratory testing
  • Computer simulation

Trine University's mechanical engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.

The experience: Hands-on projects through the entire degree program

Practical designs are the result of any engineering effort, and beginning as a freshman, you will be exposed to project work emphasizing engineering design. Project management, design and manufacture techniques are learned through hands-on involvement in the laboratories, and brought to life in a year-long senior design project completed in the senior year.

The result: Successful careers in crucial industries

The Wade Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering places students in industries critical to the nation's interests, including:

  • Manufacturing
  • Automotive
  • Aviation
  • Energy conservation

Within six months of graduating, 100 percent* of graduates secure opportunities within the field and enjoy starting annual salaries exceeding $60,000, with some as high as $100,000.

*Class of 2019; knowledge rate of 96 percent.

Additional Information

The mechanical engineering department has opportunities for internships and co-operative employment for those interested in gaining real-world engineering experience. Students in the Co-operative employment program alternate semesters working at a Co-op partner's facility and taking classes. A minimum of three work assignments is required to complete the program.

Typical initial assignments include updating engineering drawings, creating solid models from existing drawings, running a routine test or monitoring the quality of manufactured products. Typical final assignments include designing a new product or process, developing and supervising a test procedure, or developing and implementing a quality control program.

Below is a list of some of our Co-op and internship partners:
  • Belcan Engineering
  • Borg-Warner
  • Cooper Tire and Rubber
  • Dana
  • DePuy Orthopaedics
  • Eaton-Aeroquip
