Parental Rights

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that maintains the confidentiality of student educational records. All schools that receive funding from the U.S. Department of Education must abide by the law. FERPA’s basic tenets state that parents or eligible students (18 years or older) have the following rights under (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99):

• Parents and eligible students have the right to inspect and review student education records maintained by the school
• Parents and eligible students have the right to request that a school corrects record they believe to be incorrect
• Schools must have written consent to release any information from a student’s educational record
